When we slightly damage our teeth, we need it sorted out. The process in which to restore the tooth is called ‘filling’ The replacement itself is also called a filling. It is called a filling due to the fact it ‘fills’ the gap between the breakage and where the remainder of the tooth used to be. A slightly damaged tooth is called a ‘chipped tooth’, due to the fact the tooth looks as if it has a small chip taken out of it. Filling a tooth is a simple and quick process at the dentists, although the filling may not be permanent.

Many people believe that brushing their teeth is enough. Most do it twice a day, with a regular toothbrush or an electric one. This is the main form of keeping our teeth clean, however, it isn’t the only one. The gap between each tooth is hard to get to, due to how thin it is. A motion called flossing can help this. Flossing is simply a very thin piece of string, placed in between the gap and rubbed side to side, which is a process called ‘flossed’. Flossing may also maintain better breath, as plaque caught between our teeth if not caught in brushing, will continue to flourish.

All of us have to go to the dentists. We may be as fit as the best athletes in the world, and as active as the most sporty amongst us, but if we don’t go to the dentist, then our teeth will eventually fall apart and corrode, leaving us less attractive. A second helping to keep our teeth white, is by using white-coloured toothpaste. It is a specific type of toothpaste which helps bring the enamel out more in the tooth, this making them appear whiter, and removing the yellowish teeth which we gain via not enough brushing teeth etc.

In my previous job I had many different colleagues and friends, however, there is nothing worse than coming back from lunch and sitting down to your desk when a colleague comes over and breathes in your face and they have bad breath. This is often accentuated if the person has been drinking the night before, eats garlic, doesn’t brush their teeth or even smokes and then doesn’t chew some gum or have a mint.

This is one of my personal HATES, it is disgusting!!!  Brush your teeth and have some consideration for other people. It is just plain bad manners to have bad breath and then force others to put up with smelling it. It is anti-social. On occasions there are medical reasons for bad breath but the majority of the time it is people having bad personal hygiene so sort your bad breath out!!

What is dental phobia? Basically, this is when you have an irrational fear of going to the dentist. There are two extremes of dental phobias, one type may spend too much time thinking about their teeth or dentists or dental situations, and then the other type of dental phobias spend a lot of time trying to avoid thinking of their teeth or dentists or dental situations.

Trying not to think about your teeth is very hard, especially with the vast amount of toothpaste adverts on TV and on billboards etc. In my opinion, you need to bite the bullet and take yourself to the dentist for regular check-ups. This will benefit you in the long term as your dentist will be able to help with toothache, prevent future issues with your teeth and also pin point any underlying health problems.

Mouthwash is brilliant for giving your teeth a bit of added protection for the day. There are loads of different brands out there promising fresh breath and additional resistance to plaque and other threats to your oral health.

You can experiment with different varieties of mouthwash to find your favourite. Not all flavours will be to your taste and some models offer different oral protection features.

Next time you visit your dentist, mention the mouthwash you are using as they may be able to advise you on whether this is a suitable brand, or whether something else would manage your teeth better.

When you are out and about, you are likely to eat or drink something besides water at some point. You can hardly be expected to take a toothbrush with you wherever you go, and yet you can’t ignore your oral hygiene altogether when you’re out of the house.

Sometimes it is a question of having eaten or drank something that could potentially give you stale breath. On other occasions you are acutely aware that you’ve taken in a bit of sugar that could be acting negatively on your teeth all day.

In these events you should carry around a pack of sugar-free gum. Gum can freshen your breath in an instant and can help stimulate the production of saliva to neutralise acid on your teeth.

Your teeth are covered by a protective substance that is known as enamel. Enamel coats the surface of each tooth, but it needs to be preserved in order to ensure your teeth stay protected.

Certain foods and drinks can have a deleterious effect on your tooth enamel. Acidic drinks are the main culprits, including fizzy pop and sugary juices, including healthy, fresh fruit juice. Sweets are also a particular danger to tooth enamel.

If you can’t quit the sugary drinks and sweets, then one way you can combat enamel depletion is to neutralise the acid in your mouth with milk or water immediately afterwards. Brushing too soon after eating acidic foods only rubs more enamel away.

If you are a smoker or you enjoy your coffee and tea a little bit too much, your daily habits can start to have an effect on your teeth.

Regular brushing and flossing can’t quite compete with the intensive staining that coffee and cigarettes subject your teeth to, so if you can’t give up, then you have to be prepared to spend a little more on your oral health.

You can start by buying a gentle whitening toothpaste. You’ll find these in ready supply at your local chemists. If the damage is a little beyond the capabilities of these products, there are intensive whitening treatments on the market that could set you back anything from £10 to £100.

Brushing your teeth properly can be a saviour when it comes to having fresh breath and keeping your teeth healthy. But most people don’t actually use good technique or even brush their teeth for long enough! Below is a short guide to help you clean your teeth properly.
For good brushing techniques follow these very simple rules:
1.    Brush for a least 2 minutes (120 seconds)
2.    Make sure your brush strokes are short and gentle
3.    Pay special consideration to your gums, the teeth right at the back of the mouth that are hard to get to, and any fillings or crowns or fixed teeth.
